Tingle, ThunderBolts shutout Gateway

Bolts 2 Grizzlies 0

CRESTWOOD, IL – Travis Tingle threw six shutout innings and the ThunderBolts combined on their third shutout of the season as they defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 2-0 at Standard Bank Stadium Tuesday night.

Tingle was perfect through four innings for the ThunderBolts (28-38) who had only one hit of their own through four innings. Tingle retired the first 13 batters he faced before Blake Brown singled to become the first baserunner for the Grizzlies (24-42).

The Bolts got on the board in the fifth when they took advantage of some control problems for Gateway starter Dakota Smith. Marquis Riley was walked and Larry Balkwill was hit by a pitch putting two runners on base with two outs. Mike Torres came through with a base hit to score Riley and give the Bolts a 1-0 lead.

They added another run the following inning to make it 2-0. Cody Keefer singled and moved to second on a Jacob Tanis walk. Riley doubled home Keefer to double the lead.

That was all the Windy City pitching staff would need. Tingle departed after six innings, having allowed only two hits. Cameron Giannini, Pete Whittingslow and Joel Lima each threw a shutout frame to secure the win and the shutout.

The Grizzlies would finish the game with only three hits, all singles. They had just one player reach second base in the game and no one made it as far as third.

Tingle (5-5) reached the .500 mark for the first time this year with the win and Smith (1-1) was the tough-luck loser, allowing two runs in six innings. Lima worked the ninth for his third save.

The ThunderBolts and Grizzlies will continue their series on Wednesday at Standard Bank Stadium. The Bolts will be giving away a Boomer wobbler bank courtesy of First Midwest Bank. On the field, Jake Fisher (2-6, 6.05) takes the hill against Gateway’s Vince Molesky (3-4, 6.04) First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on wcthunderbolts.com.
