Windy City loses win streak but earns doubleheader split

Otters 1 Bolts 0

EVANSVILLE, IN – Following a three-hour rain delay, the ThunderBolts lost their eight-game winning streak with a 1-0 loss to the Evansville Otters. They rebounded with a 6-2 win in game two early Friday morning for a doubleheader split.

Evansville scored the only run they would need in game one in the bottom of the first. Josh Allen doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

The Bolts had a few opportunities to tie, most notably in the fifth inning when Max White and Larry Balkwill singled to put runners at the corners with one out. They also had the tying run at second with one out in the seventh but couldn’t get him in.

Trevor Walch (3-2) pitched six shutout innings for the win and Austin Wright (2-4) allowed one run in 4.1 innings, taking the loss. Edgar Lopez earned his seventh save with a shutout seventh.

Jacob Tanis got the scoring started in game two with a second-inning double. He would score on a Ryan Deitrich groundout.

The Otters matched that with an RBI groundout from Cory Urquhart, tying the score in the third. They took the lead on a Nik Balog RBI single later in the inning.

The Bolts reclaimed the lead with a three-run fourth. Six straight men reached base with two outs and Alex Chittended provided the big hit, a two-run single that scored Tanis and Marquis Riley. The single was Chittenden’s first professional hit. Later in the inning, Chittenden stole second, allowing Ryan Deitrich to take home on the double steal.

The Bolts put the game away with a two-run sixth. RBI hits came from Mike Torres and Austin Gallagher.

Pete Whittingslow (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing one earned run for the win and Jake Raffaele (0-1) took the loss, giving up three earned runs in 3.2 innings.

The ThunderBolts continue their six-game roadtrip on Friday as they start a series with Gateway. Zak Wasserman (1-1, 5.40) starts for the Bolts against The Grizzlies’ Trevor Richards (Pro Debut). The game starts at GCS Ballpark at 7:05 and that broadcast can be heard on wcthunderbolts.com.
