Bolts wait out delay, pick up eighth straight win

EVANSVILLE, IN – The ThunderBolts sat through a three-hour rain delay before wrecking the 100th anniversary celebration of Bosse Field, defeating the Evansville Otters 6-5 in a game that ended early Thursday morning.

Evansville (18-10) struck with two runs in the second inning. Chris Sweeney singled, Kurt Wertz was hit by a pitch and they both scored on JD Dorgan’s double.

Windy City (13-13) got one back in the fourth. Jacob Tanis and Marquis Riley hit back-to-back doubles to put the Bolts on the board.

They took their first lead three innings later thanks to three Evansville errors. After Riley started the sixth with a single, the next two hitters reached on errors. Tyler Clark followed with a two-run double to give the ThunderBolts their first lead at 4-2. Clark would come in to score later in the inning when Jonathan Garcia reached on an error.

The Otters responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jeremy Nowak led off with a double before Josh Allen walked. Cory Urquhart’s single scored Nowak and both Allen and Urquhart scored on a John Schultz base hit that chased Bolts starter Jake Fisher from the game. The Windy City bullpen came on and allowed just one hit in 3.2 combined innings.

The ThunderBolts scored the game-winning run in the seventh. Jacob Tanis singled, moved to second on an error and to third on a groundout. Max White’s sacrifice fly scored Tanis to give the Bolts a 6-5 win.

Joel Lima (2-1) picked up the win out of the bullpen and Evan Mott (1-2) allowed an unearned run in relief for the Otters. James Jones earned his third save.

The ThunderBolts will wrap up their three-game series in Evansville with a doubleheader on Thursday evening. The Bolts will send Austin Wright (2-3, 5.47) and Zak Wasserman (1-1, 5.40) to the mound against Evansville’s Jake Raffaele (0-0, 2.57) and Trevor Walch (2-2, 1.80). First pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:35 and that broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3-FM and wxav.com.
