ThunderBolts nipped by Florence 5-4

FLORENCE, KY – The ThunderBolts outhit the Florence Freedom 12-4, but fell in the series opener 5-4 at UC Health Stadium Tuesday night.

The Freedom got off to a great start, scoring three runs in the first inning on just one hit. Cole Miles led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded in the same inning, Eli Anderson hit Adam Taylor to bring home the second run and walked Rolando Gomez for the third.

The ThunderBolts responded with a two-run second inning. Ryan Soares and Max White led off with singles and Davidson Peguero singled home Soares. White would score on a Garrett Carey groundout.

The Freedom made their lead 4-2 with a run in the fourth. Gomez walked, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly.

The ThunderBolts got moving offensively again in the eighth. Andrew Brauer singled and scored on a Kyle Robinson base hit. The Bolts got the tying run to third base with no outs but Pete Levitt pitched out of the jam.

Gomez’s solo home run in the bottom of the eighth made it 5-3.

The ThunderBolts threatened in the ninth when Garrett Carey singled and Brauer doubled him home to make it a one run game. Brauer stood at second with two outs when Ed Kohout struck out Mike Torres to end the game.

Chuck Weaver (6-5) allowed three runs in seven innings for the win and Eli Anderson (1-7) gave up four runs (three earned) in five innings for the loss.

The ThunderBolts and Freedom play two games on Wednesday. Jake Fisher (4-9, 4.75) and Travis Tingle (7-5, 5.06) will start for the Bolts and Florence will start Dave Middendorf (4-7, 4.63) and Michael O’Neal (2-4, 5.40). First pitch for game one is scheduled for 4:35 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
