Bolts fall prey to Boomers comeback

Boomers 4 Bolts 3

SCHAUMBURG, IL – The Schaumburg Boomers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the ThunderBolts 4-3 at Boomers Stadium Monday night.

The Bolts had led throughout much of the game, taking their first lead in the top of the third. Chase Tucker singled and moved to third on Evan Button’s single. Mike Torres’s sacrifice fly brought him in. They followed a similar script in the fifth when Tucker singled again and again scored on a Torres sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Dyllon Nuernberg had not allowed a hit through four innings, but in the fifth, the Boomers tied the score with four singles. Ty Nelson and Jordan Dean had the RBI hits.

With two outs in the seventh, the ThunderBolts took the lead back. Jayce Ray lined a two-out double off the right field wall and Torres singled him in, making the score 3-2.

That was still the score in the eighth when the Boomers rallied. Chad Mozingo reached on an error and stole second base. He scored on a Sean Mahley double and Mahley crossed the plate on Steve McQuail’s base hit, scoring what proved to be the winning run.

The ThunderBolts outhit the Boomers 10-6, but ran into trouble on the basepaths all night, failing to score more than once in an inning.

Preston Hatcher (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the win and Reese McGraw (0-2) allowed the two runs (one earned) in the eighth and took the loss.

The ThunderBolts will take Tuesday off before beginning a three-game home series with the River City Rascals on Wednesday. Matt Wickswat (3-9, 5.21) will start for the Bolts. The Rascals have not yet named a starter. It is $1.00 hot dogs and soda at Standard Bank Stadium as well as Advocate South Suburban Hospital Wellness Wednesday for the 7:05 start and the broadcast can be heard on wcthunderbolts.com.
