Bolts take pitchers duel with Normal, 2-006/25/2013 9:02 PM
CRESTWOOD, IL—Despite owning one of the top ERAs in the Frontier League, Dyllon Nuernberg earned his first win of the season Tuesday evening at Standard Bank Stadium. Windy City (14-21) shut out the Normal CornBelters (18-16) for a 2-0 victory. This was the second straight pitchers’ duel between the ‘Bolts and their opponent, but unlike Sunday night, Windy City had the lead for the majority of the game. Although Nuernberg faced a lot of jams early on in the game, the ThunderBolts’ starting pitcher stranded five CornBelters, three in scoring position. The fourth inning was a key for Windy City as the team took the lead and its starting pitcher began to work more efficiently. Zach Aakhus led off the inning with a single, but moved all the way to third base on a misplayed ball by Normal’s right fielder. Two batters later Andrew Brauer sacrificed home Aakhus with a fly ball to center field. From innings 4-6 Nuernberg retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced, he eventually ended the day going seven innings with seven strikeouts. The ThunderBolts picked up one more run in the 8th as Ryan Soares singled home Mike Torres for a 2-0 lead. Nuernberg (1-1) worked seven shutout innings, outdueling Drew Provence (2-2) who worked seven innings giving up just one run and striking out eight. Michael Click (6) picked up the save. These two teams will meet back up on the baseball diamond right away with a 10:35 a.m. first pitch Wednesday morning. Luis Noel (2-2, 4.54) will take the mound for Normal against Windy City’s Matt Wickswat (2-4, 5.59). Fans that cannot make it to “Big Splash Day” at Standard Bank Stadium will be able to tune into the action on 88.3 FM WXAV and wxav.com.
