ThunderBolts split doubleheader at Tri-City

TROY, NY – The ThunderBolts held off the Tri-City ValleyCats for a 4-3 win in game one of a doubleheader before dropping the nightcap 7-5 for a split at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium Saturday night.
Justin Fogel put the ThunderBolts on top in game one, hitting a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Bolts would go on to lead the entire game.
Fogel added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the third and a Josue Urdaneta RBI single in the fourth made it 4-0.
Over the first five innings, Tyler Wehrle gave up only two hits and didn’t allow a runner past second base. In the sixth, Brayden Jobert reached on an error before Ian Walters hit a two-out homer, cutting the deficit in half.
The ValleyCats (30-46) made it interesting, scoring another run in the seventh but Carter Delaney got the final three outs for his fourth save.
Wehrle didn’t allow an earned run over six innings, picking up the win. Chad Gartland (4-3) took the loss, allowing four runs in 5.1 innings.
Tri-City batted around in the first inning of game two, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 lead.
The Bolts came back with two runs in the second. Robbie Ayers singled and Oscar Serratos doubled. They scored on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly, respectively.
The ValleyCats kept the pressure on, though, getting two more runs in the third before a Dylan Broderick home run in the fourth inning made it a 7-2 lead.
The ThunderBolts continued to fight, tightening the game in the fifth with a run on an Ayers sacrifice fly. They brought home two more in the sixth with Fogel’s RBI single pulling the Bolts to within two runs. That was where the rally ended, though, as Wyatt Cameron got the final four outs for his fifth save.
Arlos Marynczak (3-2) allowed three runs in five innings for the win. AJ Campbell (5-5) gave up five earned runs in four innings for the loss.
The series and road trip come to a close for the Bolts on Sunday evening. Dante Maietta (1-3, 4.87) starts for Windy City. First pitch from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium is set for 4:00 CDT and broadcast details can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
