Bolts wrap up sweep of Schaumburg

SCHAUMBURG, IL – The ThunderBolts outlasted the Schaumburg Boomers in a pitchers’ duel at Wintrust Field Thursday night, completing the three-game sweep with a 3-1 win.

Kyle Fitzgerald hit a solo home run in the second inning to give Schaumburg a 1-0 lead, but that was the last base runner allowed by Isaac Milburn for the next four innings. He retired 11 in a row.

The ThunderBolts (46-41) broke through against Cole Cook in the fourth inning. Justin Fogel hit a leadoff single and Carlos Pena followed with a base hit. A groundout advanced the runners to second and third before Daryl Ruiz came up with a two-out two-run single to give the Bolts their first lead at 2-1.

The following inning, with two outs and no one on base, Michael Sandle extended the inning with an infield single. Justin Fogel followed and Jared Beebe followed with singles as well and the three straight hits brought home a run to make it 3-1.

Schaumburg threatened in the later innings. They put two runners on in the seventh, eighth and ninth but couldn’t break through as Justin Lovell and Carter Delaney closed out the game with 2.2 scoreless innings.

Milburn (4-3) earned the win, going 6.1 innings and allowing just one run on four hits with six strikeouts. Cook (7-8) took the loss. He allowed three runs on nine hits over seven innings.

The win pulls the ThunderBolts within two games of the first-place Boomers with 15 games remaining in the season.

The Bolts head home for the weekend, welcoming the Gateway Grizzlies to town for a Beggars Pizza Fireworks Friday. Dante Maietta (1-4, 5.27) starts game one of the series against a to be announced Gateway starter.
