Bolts blast Mud Monsters in Mississippi

PEARL, MS – Carlos Peña hit a pair of two-run homers and led the Windy City ThunderBolts to a 9-2 win over the Mississippi Mud Monsters at Trustmark Park Wednesday afternoon.
The Bolts (49-43) jumped on Mississippi (36-55) in the first inning when Michael Sandle walked, stole second and scored on a Jared Beebe single. The next pitch was hammered over the right field wall for Peña’s first homer of the game. They added one more run as Robbie Ayers walked and stole a base. He scored on a Daryl Ruiz single that made it 4-0.
Peña struck again in the third. He followed a Justin Fogel double with another two-run shot to put the Bolts ahead 6-0.
The Mud Monsters were able to break through with single runs in the fourth and fifth, but the ThunderBolts kept the pressure on. With two outs in the top of the fifth, Ruiz doubled and Tony Livermore singled him home.
They added two insurance runs late. Ayers smacked an RBI double in the seventh inning that made the score 8-2, and their final run came one inning later. Josue Urdaneta singled and, after stealing his 30th bag of the year, scored on Fogel’s RBI single.
Isaac Milburn (5-3) pitched a season-high seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits for the win. Brian Williams (3-9) lasted five innings, allowing seven runs for the loss.
The win moved the ThunderBolts 1.5 games out of first place pending the result between Schaumburg and Evansville on Wednesday night.
The six-game series with Mississippi continues on Thursday night. Dante Maietta (1-4, 5.31) takes the mound for the ThunderBolts against Julian Minaya (0-1, 6.28) for the Mud Monsters.
