SCHAUMBURG, IL – Tyler Wehrle tossed six shutout innings as the ThunderBolts beat the Schaumburg Boomers for the second day in a row, 6-0 at Wintrust Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Bolts (45-41) scored the only run they would need just four batters into the game as back-to-back hitters walked and Jared Beebe hit an RBI single off the wall.
The next inning, Tanner Reaves reached on an error and Tony Livermore singled. Both men scored on a Liam McArthur double that made the score 3-0. Two batters later, after a Michael Sandle single, Justin Fogel doubled the lead with a three-run homer.
The pitchers took over after that as neither team got a runner past second base the rest of the afternoon.
Wehrle allowed only three hits, all of them singles and only twice in his six innings had to pitch with a runner in scoring position. He set down the last five batters he faced and finished the day with a career-high nine strikeouts.
The Boomers (48-38) didn’t have any more success against the Bolts’ bullpen as Zach Cameron and Noah Manning combined to toss three scoreless frames.
Wehrle improved to 5-3 with the win. Ross Thompson (9-4) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) over five innings.
The win is the Bolts’ second shutout in three games and their third straight win overall. It pulls them within three games of Schaumburg for the West Division Lead with 16 games remaining.
The series concludes with a chance for a ThunderBolts series sweep on Thursday night. Isaac Milburn (3-3, 5.57) makes his second Windy City start of the season and Schaumburg counters with Cole Cook (7-7, 4.49). First pitch from Wintrust Field is scheduled for 6:30 CDT and broadcast information can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
