Wehrle Pitches ThunderBolts to Game One Win

PEARL, MS – Tyler Wehrle pitched a ThunderBolts’ season-high eight innings and allowed only one run as the Bolts defeated the Mississippi Mud Monsters 8-1 in the opener of a six-game series at Trustmark Park Tuesday night.
It didn’t take long for the ThunderBolts (48-43) to get on the board. In the top of the first, Michael Sandle walked, Justin Fogel singled him to third and Jared Beebe brought him home on a sacrifice fly.
After Wehrle retired the first nine batters of the game, Mississippi (36-54) got their first man aboard when Brayland Skinner was hit by a pitch leading off the fourth. Kyle Booker followed with an RBI double, tying the score.
In the next half inning, the Bolts reclaimed the lead. The rally started the same way as in the first. Sandle walked and Fogel singled to put runners at the corners. Beebe gave the Bolts the advantage with an RBI fielder’s choice. Carlos Pena followed with a single and Victor Cerny hit a two-run double to make it 4-1.
In the eighth, the Bolts put the game away, loading the bases on a single and a pair of walks. Justin Fogel hit a grand slam to make it 8-1.
Wehrle retired the last five batters he faced and ten of the last 11. Zach Cameron followed with a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the win.
Wehrle struck out eight and walked one while allowing only four hits, improving to 6-3 with the win. Jackson Smith (4-4) took the loss after allowing four runs over six innings.
The six-game series continues with a morning contest on Wednesday. Isaac Milburn (4-3, 5.19) takes the mound for the ThunderBolts and will be opposed by Mississippi’s Brian Williams (3-8, 6.31).
