ThunderBolts Cruise to Series Win

BOX SCORE

POMONA, NY – Carlos Peña hit two home runs and Ramon Rodriguez held the New York Boulders to just one run as the Windy City ThunderBolts won the rubber game from New York 7-1 at Clover Stadium Thursday night.

For the second straight day, the ThunderBolts (37-38) scored in the top of the first inning. With two outs and no one on, Justin Fogel launched a solo home run to right field, his second homer in as many days.

They added a run in the second as Robbie Ayers doubled and Tony Livermore singled him home.

New York (40-35) made a bid to tie the score in the bottom of the second when, with a man on first base, John Schroeder hit a deep fly to right field. Michael Sandle leapt over the wall, landing on the other side of it, and held on to the ball to take away the homer and preserve the lead.

Sandle led off the next inning with a triple and scored on a Jared Beebe base hit and Peña hit his first home run of the game as the Bolts doubled the lead.

They made it 6-0 in the fifth, loading the bases on a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. Ayers followed with a groundball up the middle. New York shortstop Austin Dennis made the diving stop but couldn’t record an out as one run scored. Daryl Ruiz drew a bases loaded walk to bring in another.

Peña added the final run on a ninth-inning blast, his 14th home run of the year.

Rodriguez (2-1) lasted 6.1 innings, striking out four and allowing one run for the win and Gabriel Barrett (0-3) gave up six runs in five innings to take the loss.

The ThunderBolts head upstate on Friday to begin a three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats. Tyler Wehrle (3-3, 4.22) starts the series opener for the Bolts against Tri-City’s Chad Gartland (1-2, 5.40). First pitch from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium is set for 5:30 CDT and broadcast details can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
