Bolts Gain Game on Schaumburg with Walk-Off Win

CRESTWOOD, IL – Carlos Pena’s walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth inning delivered the ThunderBolts a critical 5-4 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers at Ozinga Field Tuesday night, moving the Bolts to four games behind Schaumburg for first place in the Frontier League West Division.
The Boomers (48-37) scored the first run on a Kellum Clark RBI single in the top of the third, but the Bolts (44-41) answered in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Josue Urdaneta doubled and Liam McArthur singled him in.
The ThunderBolts took their first lead the following inning, when Justin Fogel walked and scored on a Victor Cerny single.
In the sixth, Cole Smith’s sacrifice fly for Schaumburg tied the score, but the Bolts again responded quickly, reclaiming the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a Michael Sandle sacrifice fly.
The Bolts took their 3-2 lead into the ninth, where Schaumburg got a leadoff walk and, with two outs, brought in the tying run on a Clark single.
The Boomers scored their tiebreaker run in the top of the tenth, but couldn’t add any more as Urdaneta made a diving play to end the inning with a double play.
In the bottom of the tenth, Holland Townes walked the bases loaded. His third walk of the inning, to Jared Beebe, forced in the tying run. Townes fell behind Pena 3-0 before the ThunderBolts outfielder laced a single into right field, scoring McArthur from third for the winning run.
Carter Delaney (9-0) picked up the win in relief and Townes (2-3) took the loss.
The series moves to Schaumburg for the final two games as the Bolts send Tyler Wehrle (4-3, 3.57) to the Wintrust Field mound on Wednesday afternoon. Schaumburg counters with Ross Thompson (9-3, 4.44). First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 CDT and broadcast information can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
