Windy City takes game one in Schaumburg

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Chad Cregar’s five RBIs led the way for the ThunderBolts in a 6-4 win over the Schaumburg Boomers in game one of a three-game series at Schaumburg Baseball Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Cregar hit a three-run homer in the first to put the Bolts on top 3-0 early. The blast, his seventh of the year, followed singles by Bob Glover and Chris Wade. For Glover, it was the first hit of his career in his first professional at-bat.

Stephen Sauer was the starting pitcher for the ThunderBolts and pitched six strong innings. Gerard Hall singled in the first inning and Steve McQuail singled to lead off the second, and those were the only base runners for Schaumburg through six. Sauer retired fifteen consecutive batters before losing the streak in the seventh inning.

Meanwhile, the Bolts offense was providing a little more breathing room. Hits for Wade and Mike Torres and a Glover hit-by-pitch loaded the bases in the fifth for Cregar, who brought a run home on a groundout. Andy Chriscaden’s sacrifice fly made it 5-0.

Windy City’s final run came in the seventh inning. After Torres and Wade each singled to put runners at the corners, Cregar’s single scored Torres to give the ThunderBolts a 6-0 lead.

Two walks and two hits for Schaumburg to begin the seventh inning chased Sauer from the game. Sean Mahley’s single was the big blow, scoring two runs. Andy Mee came in with two on and no outs and struck out the side to end the threat.

The Boomers posted another run in the eighth when Chad Mozingo doubled and later scored on a groundout. In the ninth, McQuail’s first home run made it 6-4, but that was as close as Schaumburg would come as the ThunderBolts picked up the victory.

Sauer improves to 3-1 with the win and Tyler Watkins (1-3) allowed five runs in six innings for the loss. Shane Zegarac got his second save.

The Bolts and Boomers will continue their series Monday night at 6:30. Dustin Williams (3-2) will get the start in game two against Schaumburg’s Robbie Penny (2-2). The game broadcast can be heard on sportsjuice.com.
