For the second straight night, the River City Rascals came back from an early hole to defeat the ThunderBolts at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon, MO on Wednesday night. 6-5 was the final.
The Bolts put four runs on the board in the first inning on four hits. Unlike Tuesday, when Windy City did it on two home runs, it was small ball that gave them the lead on Wednesday night. RBI base hits came from Ryne White, Zach Aakhus and JT Restko and Jeremy Hamilton had an RBI groundout.
The Rascals came back with three runs in their half of the inning off of Ricky Meinhold who was starting for the first time in over two weeks. A wild pitch, a Stephen Holdren single and a Josh Banda RBI groundout contributed to the scoring in the inning. River City tied the game in the second on Doug Sanders’s sac fly.
In the third inning, Aakhus clubbed his first home run of the year to give the Bolts a 5-4 lead, but they would not score again. They kept hitting, finishing with 13, but they stranded one base runner in every inning.
River City tied the game in the fifth on a Michael Torres error, his third of the game. With Scott Robinson at third base, Aakhus tried to pick him off from the catcher’s spot, but Torres dropped the ball allowing Robinson to score. The score remained tied into the seventh when Holdren knocked the first pitch he saw from Bradley Blanks into the River City bullpen, giving the Rascals the final score of 6-5. Keli’i Zablan picked up the win (0-2) and Blanks took the loss (1-2). Jason Lowey saved his 13th despite a shaky ninth inning that saw Jeremy Hamilton single with two outs, only to be thrown out at second looking to take an extra base on a Doug Sanders error. That play ended the game.
The ThunderBolts and Rascals wrap up their three-game series with River City on Thursday night. Andrew Werner (5-2) will take the mound for Windy City against Gary Moran (3-3). The game is set to begin at 7:05 and it can be heard live on Sportsjuice.com.
