Gehring, Beach Bums Baffle 'Bolts, 9-0

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Ryan Gehring need only two hours and one minute to complete a seven-hit shutouts, leading the Traverse City Beach Bums (16-6) to a 9-0 shutout of the Windy City ThunderBolts (8-14) on Friday night at Wuerfel Park.

Only once did a ThunderBolts runner reach third base against Gehring (2-2): Wes Long, in the ninth. Not once did Windy City put more than one runner on base or collect more than one hit during an inning.

The tall southpaw from Wisconsin struck out four batters while walking none in spinning Traverse City's second consecutive complete game, following Bryan Rembisz's effort from a night before.

The Beach Bums' offense took advantage of four 'Bolts errors, including three in a six-run seventh inning rally that used only two base hits. Leadoff hitter Mike Goetz led the way with three hits and three runs scored in five at-bats.

Despite tallying nine runs Traverse City only collected four RBI, thanks to scoring runs on the errors, a double play grounder, a passed ball and a wild pitch.

ThunderBolts starter Amos Ramon (0-1) suffered the loss, pitching five batters into the fateful seventh without recording an out. Ramon gave up eight runs on 10 hits and a walk, striking out two.

Windy City has now been outscored 30-9 in seventh innings during the 2008 season.

In the losing cause, centerfielder Mike Coles slugged two doubles in notching his second consecutive three-hit game.

The middle contest of the three-game series will be played on Saturday night at 6:05 CDT, featuring Windy City righthander Dallas Sims (0-0, 0.00) making his first professional start. Sims will be opposed by Traverse City righthander David Nathanson (4-0, 1.53)
