Bolts' fast start leads to win over Tri-City

BOX SCORE

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts scored three runs in the second inning to take an early lead that carried them to a 5-3 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in front of nearly 3,200 fans at Ozinga Field Saturday night.

The Bolts (2-1) got the scoring started with two outs in the second. Alex Lugo, in his first at bat of the season, hit a line drive to left field that Javeyan Williams was unable to come up with as two runs scored on a double. Cam Phelts followed with a double to make it 3-0.

Jaxon Hallmark hit an RBI single for the Valley Cats (1-1) the next inning but the Bolts extended their lead in the fifth. With two outs, Jaylen Hubbard, Ethan Lopez and Christian Kuzemka hit consecutive singles with Kuzemka driving in two runs.

Tri-City tightened the ballgame in the sixth on an Alec Olund two-run homer to make it 5-3, but that was as close as they would get.

Three ThunderBolt relievers combined to throw three shutout innings, allowing just one base runner. Derrick Edington struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save of the year.

Buddie Pindel (1-0) had the best start of the season for the Bolts so far, allowing three runs over six innings with eight strikeouts as he earned the win. Wes Albert (0-1) gave up five runs over six innings and took the loss.

The ThunderBolts continue their season-opening seven-game home stand on Sunday afternoon with the rubber match against Tri-City. John Mikolaicyk makes his season debut on the mound for the Bolts against Tri-City’s Dan Beebe. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 CDT on JULIE Family Sunday. Fans will be able to run the bases and get autographs after the game and mothers get in free for Mothers’ Day. Fans not in attendance can find the broadcast through wcthunderbolts.com.
