ThunderBolts split wild doubleheader

Bolts 7, 4 Slammers 9, 3

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts lost a six-run lead to drop game one of a doubleheader against the Joliet Slammers Tuesday night but bounced back to win a dramatic 4-3 extra inning game two. The split kept the Bolts one gam up on River City for the final wild card spot.

Game one was the continuation of a suspended game that began on August 3 with the ThunderBolts (46-39) leading 4-0 at the start of play on Tuesday. They extended that lead to 7-1, getting RBI hits from Blair Beck and Keenyn Walker and a sacrifice fly from Corey Bass.

It was a six-run lead in the eighth inning when the Slammers (38-46) made their move. They batted around and scored five runs in the inning, getting RBI doubles from Ridge Hoopii-Haslam and Spencer Navin. The big hit, though, was a two-out three-run homer for Travis Bolin.

They won the game in the ninth as Hoopii-Haslam’s RBI double tied the game. He scored on an error to score the game-winner.

The Bolts loaded the bases in the ninth with two outs but Confesor Lara got Zack Jones to hit into a double play, ending the game. It was Lara’s 19th save. Brian McKenna (1-1) picked up the win and Brian Loconsole (1-4) took the loss.

Game two started well for the Bolts as an error led to their first run. Joliet answered with two in the second on three straight two-out hits, including RBI hits from Luis Diaz and Steven Pollakov.

Tim Zier’s RBI triple tied the score but Joliet reclaimed the lead with a Spencer Navin RBI single in the sixth.

Corey Bass hit a solo home run to send the game to extra innings and the ThunderBolts won in the ninth. Bass started at second base and Andrew Dundon bunted him to third. Ransom LaLonde swung at the first pitch and flew to deep center field, scoring Bass to win 4-3.

Josh Glick (5-1) threw three shutout innings for the win and Jordan Wellander (1-2) allowed the winning run for the loss.

The series continues Wednesday night at 7:05. Will Landsheft (6-8, 4.89) starts for the Bolts against Joliet’s Scot Hoffman (0-1, 10.97). The broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
