Despite 15 hits, ThunderBolts fall 9-8

Grizzlies 9 Bolts 8

SAUGET, IL – The ThunderBolts came back from five runs down but fell just short as they took their second straight loss to the Gateway Grizzlies, 9-8 at GCS Ballpark Saturday night.

The Bolts (14-16) had seven hits in the first three innings but only managed one run on Ryan Deitrich’s RBI double.

Gateway (11-21) took their first lead with a two-run third. After back-to-back singles, Richard Seigel scored on an error. Later in the inning, Cody Livesay crossed the plate on the second error of the third. Gateway made it 3-1 in the fifth when Ben Waldrip walked and scored on a Garrett Vail groundout.

The ThunderBolts rebounded to tie the score with two runs in the sixth. Jacob Tanis singled and Marquis Riley reached on an error. They scored on groundouts from Max White and Ransom LaLonde.

The Grizzlies broke the tie with a five-run bottom of the sixth. With two on, Ryan Soares and Madison Beaird picked up RBI singles followed by a Waldrip three-run home run to make the score 8-3.

The ThunderBolts got one back on a Tanis sacrifice fly, but Gateway again responded, getting an RBI single from Beaird to make it 9-4.

Windy City’s comeback began in earnest in the eighth. Mike Torres hit a bases-loaded single, his fourth hit of the night for their first run of the inning and Tyler Clark scored on a wild pitch. Coco Johnson and Torres both crossed the plate when Deitrich reached on an error to make it 9-8.

The Bolts had a chance to tie in the ninth when White was hit by a pitch and made it to third but with two outs, Johnson hit a flyball to the warning track that was brought in by Beaird to end the game.

Max Schonfeld (2-1) allowed ten hits but only one earned run in six innings for the win and Danny Jimenez (2-2) gave up four earned runs in 5.1 innings for the loss.

The ThunderBolts and Grizzlies conclude their three-game set on Sunday evening. Travis Tingle (2-4, 2.43) starts for the Bolts against the Grizzlies’ Vincent Molesky (3-2, 6.04). The game starts at GCS Ballpark at 6:05 and that broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com
