Bolts sweep Washington in 11 innings

Bolts 5 Things 4

WASHINGTON, PA – The ThunderBolts scored two runs in the ninth inning to send the game to extra innings, eventually winning on Mike Torre’s base hit in the 11th, 5-4 over the Washington Wild Things at Consol Energy Park Monday night.

The Bolts took an early lead just two batters into the game when Evan Button doubled and Torres singled him in.

Washington responded in kind, scoring on their first two batters. Tyler hall tripled and scored on a Shain Stoner single.

Windy City took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Kyle Robinson doubled and Jayce Ray brought him home on a groundout but Washington answered again. In the bottom of the fourth, doubles from C.J. Beatty, Quincy Latimore and Stewart Ijames gave the Wild Things a 3-2 lead.

Mark Samuelson homered in the sixth to make it 4-2 and that is how the score would remain until the ninth.

The ThunderBolts scored their two run on just one hit. Robinson started by reaching on a three-base error and Andrew Brauer made it to first base on a catcher’s interference call. Ray hit a grounder to second that was booted by Beatty, allowing Robinson to score with no outs. Chase Tucker’s suicide squeeze bunt brought the tying run and a subsequent throwing error moved Ray to third base. The Bolts had a chance to win in the ninth on an Evan Button flyout, but Ray was thrown out at the plate by Hall.

The game went scoreless in the tenth, but the ThunderBolts loaded the bases in the 11th on a dropped third strike, infield single and a hit batter before Torres’s single won the game.

Michael Click (3-0) pitched a scoreless tenth for the win and Reese McGraw threw the 11th for his second save. Zach Fleshman (1-2) gave up the winning run, taking the loss.

The ThunderBolts return home Tuesday to begin a six-game homestand as the Joliet Slammers come to town. Brian Oliver (4-6, 4.63) will start game one for Windy City. First pitch at Standard Bank Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
