Things 12 Bolts 0

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Washington Wild Things scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the ThunderBolts 12-0 in game one of a three-game series at Ozinga Field Tuesday night.

Sean Leland struck out the first two batters of the game before the Wild Things (28-39) jumped on him with five straight two-out singles. Alex Murphy and JJ Fernandez picked up the first two RBIs and Cameron Baranek had the next two.

They poured on six more runs in the fourth inning. Shaine Hughes hit an RBI single and Fernandez drove him in with a double. He finished the game with five hits including three doubles.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth, Drew Bene brought home three runs with a double to break the game wide open and Ryan Cox’s double that scored Bene made it 10-0.

The best scoring chance for the ThunderBolts (28-39) came in the fifth inning. They loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of singles and a hit by pitch. Brynn Martinez hit a liner into rightfield but Hector Roa made a diving grab to end the threat.

The Bolts hit a pair of doubles in the final four innings, one for Chase Cockrell that extended his hit streak to 11 games, but nothing more as John Havird closed out his shutout.

The final two runs for Washington came in the seventh as Fernandez hit another RBI double and Baranek hit a sacrifice fly.

Havird (5-4) went the distance for his second complete game shutout this year and Sean Leland (0-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs on 11 hits over 3.2 innings.
