ThunderBolts come up short in bid for sweep

Boomers 5 Bolts 1

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Schaumburg Boomers scored five runs over the final three innings to defeat the ThunderBolts 5-1 and prevent a sweep at Standard Bank Stadium Thursday afternoon.

Blair Beck put the ThunderBolts (3-3) ahead in the second inning with a solo home run, his second of the year.

The Bolts had several opportunities to add to the lead as they put men in scoring position with no outs in three of the first five innings. They were unable to come up with a clutch hit, though, and the score remained 1-0.

Clay Chapman retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.

Schaumburg (4-2) had only two singles through six innings, but they put their first three men on base in the seventh. Zach Weigel reached on an infield single when Beck misplayed a popup. David Harris followed with a single and Seth Spivey tied the score on an RBI double. Josh Gardiner scored Harris with a base hit and James Keller’s sacrifice fly brought home Spivey to make the score 3-1.

The ThunderBolts threatened in the eighth, putting two men on base but Alec Kenilvort pitched out of the jam. The Bolts went 0-for-9 in the game with runners in scoring position.

Schaumburg added two runs in the ninth with RBIs coming from Gardiner and Keller to make the final score 5-1.

Gunnar Kines (2-0) struck out ten over seven strong innings to pick up the victory. Chapman (0-1) lasted seven innings, allowing three runs to take the loss.

The ThunderBolts hit the road for the first time on Friday as they begin a three-game series with the Washington Wild Things in Pennsylvania. Zac Westcott (1-0, 1.13) gets the game one start for the Bolts and he will be opposed by Washington’s Chase Cunningham (1-0, 0.00). First pitch from Wild Things Park is scheduled for 6:05 and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
