Bolts' bats stifled in 5-0 loss

Things 5 Bolts 0

CRESTWOOD, IL – Chase Cunningham held the ThunderBolts to two hits over eight innings as the Washington Wild Things took the rubber match of a three-game series Sunday 5-0.

Washington (2-1) jumped very quickly onto the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the first. Rashad Brown and Jace Conrad led off the game with back-to-back singles. Brown scored on a Bralin Jackson base hit and Conrad came in on Kyle Pollock’s sacrifice fly.

The Wild Things added to their lead on a couple Windy City errors in the third. Brown reached on a bunt and advanced to second when the ball was thrown away. He scored as Conrad reached on a throwing error. Jackson’s sacrifice fly later in the inning scored Conrad to make the score 4-0.

Jackson doubled to begin the top of the sixth and Kenny Peoples-Walls tripled him in to finish the scoring.

The ThunderBolts (1-2) got their first hit in the third inning but never put a man in scoring position until the sixth, when Larry Balkwill singled, Keenyn Walker reached on an error and Coco Johnson walked. Cunningham got Tim Zier to fly out to end the inning.

The Bolts did not threaten the rest of the way as Cunningham (1-0) walked only two and struck out five while tying a career-high in innings pitched.

Brady Muller (0-1) allowed five runs (three earned) in six innings and took the loss for Windy City. Tyler Murphy and Scott Kuzminsky combined for three shutout innings of relief.

After taking Monday off, the ThunderBolts welcome the unbeaten Schaumburg Boomers to town on Tuesday morning. Kyle Von Ruden will make his first start of the year against Schaumburg’s Preston Jamison on the first of five School Days at Standard Bank Stadium, presented by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 and fans not in attendance can hear the broadcast on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
