The ThunderBolts and Oakland County Cruisers split a well pitched doubleheader at Standard Bank Stadium Saturday night. Windy City took the first game 6-1 but fell in the nightcap, 3-1.
Game one featured a wild start but settled down quickly. The Cruisers got a first inning run on a wild pitch after Bobby Andrews lead off the game with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Windy City answered when Ryne White doubled with two outs. After a walk and a hit batter, Zach Aakhus walked, scoring the run.
After that it was a great pitcher’s duel with neither Andrew Werner of the ThunderBolts nor Kevin Asselin of the Cruisers giving up much. Then in the sixth, the floodgates broke open with the Bolts batting around and getting hits Zach Aakhus, Michael Torres, Guillermo Martinez, Kent Gerst, Gilberto Mejia and Ryne White in a five-run inning that put the game away, 6-1. Werner improved to 3-2 with the win while Kevin Asselin fell to 4-1.
Game two was another good pitcher’s battle. Both Windy City’s Dustin Williams and Oakland County’s James Albury were solid into the third when the Cruisers broke through with two outs. Joash Brodin hit a fly ball to center that White lost in the lights as it fell for an RBI double. Jeremy Jones followed that up with an RBI single.
In the bottom of the third, the Bolts got one back. With two outs, Restko was hit by a pitch and White doubled him in making the score 2-1. Oakland County got one more run on a Luis Fernandez RBI single in the sixth to pad their lead, and the ThunderBolts wouldn’t threaten the rest of the game. James Albury (4-1) picked up the win going five innings and P.J. Zocchi earned his ninth save. Dustin Williams (0-1) took his first loss despite six strong innings pitched.
The ThunderBolts will travel to Avon, Ohio Sunday to begin a three game set against the Lake Erie Crushers. Brent Solich (2-2) is expected to take the mound in the series opener against the Crushers’ Phil Rummel (1-2). Game time is 4:05 with the broadcast to be on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
