CRESTWOOD, IL – Sean Godfrey hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to help the Schaumburg Boomers overcome a three-run deficit to defeat the Windy City ThunderBolts 6-5 at Standard Bank Stadium Wednesday night.
The ThunderBolts (7-8) got off to a hot start as Paddy Ledet pitched out of a first-inning jam. Ty Moore, who stood at third with no outs was thrown out trying to score on a flyout to curtail that threat, and the Bolts put three on the board in the bottom of the inning. Tim Zier was hit by a pitch, Riley Krane singled and Larry Balkwill hit a three-run homer to take a 3-0 lead.
In the third inning, Schaumburg (6-10) got RBI singles from Collin Ferguson and Clint Hardy to draw within one.
The Bolts loaded the bases in the fourth and fifth innings but didn’t score. They loaded them again in the fifth and scored two runs on RBI singles from Tyler Straub and Balkwill, extending the lead to 5-2.
The Boomers came within one again in the seventh inning, as Godfrey singled home two runs.
After the ThunderBolts stranded the bases loaded for the fourth time in the eighth inning, Schaumburg led off the ninth with Moore reaching on an error. Godfrey followed with a homer to give the Boomers their first lead.
Thanks to a Ronnie Healy double, the ThunderBolts got the tying run as far as third base in the ninth but did not score as Jake Joyce secured his second save.
Chris Hall (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the win. Devin Raftery (0-1) took the loss. Ledet allowed two runs over six innings and did not factor in the decision.
The ThunderBolts and Boomers wrap up their two-game series on Thursday night with Jaramy Jacobs (0-1, 5.00) opposing Schaumburg’s Joe Hauser (1-0, 2.50). The Sandman will be in attendance as part of White Castle Wrestling Thursdays and there will be a postgame wrestling show put on by Wrestle League of Chicago. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and fans not in attendance can hear the radio broadcast through wcthunderbolts.com.
