The Week of Jairus: Richards Wins It Again!

BOX SCORE

Sauget, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts won a three-game series a day early with a 5-4 triumph over the Gateway Grizzlies on Wednesday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. For the second straight night, Jairus Richards hit a go-ahead homer in the 9th inning.

Like game one of the series, game two began with the pitchers dominating. Bolts (10-7) starter Garrett Christman and Gateway (9-8) starter Andres Rodriguez rolled through the first three innings without a run.

In the fourth, the Bolts broke the scoreless tie on Jake Boone’s bases-clearing, three-run double. The following inning, Daryl Meyers extended the Bolts lead with a two-out, RBI single.

The Grizzlies battled back in the fifth inning. An RBI groundout for Abdiel Diaz plated the first run before Trevor Achenbach cracked a two-run homer to make it 4-3. In the bottom of the eighth, Breland Almadova tied the game, 4-4, with a sacrifice fly for Gateway.

The tie score was short-lived. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Richards hit the go-ahead homer to straight away center field.

In the bottom of the ninth, Layne Schnitz-Paxton set the Grizzlies down in order to save the one-run win. Daniel Kight (2-0) earned the win, while Carson Cupo (0-1) took the loss.

The ThunderBolts look for the sweep Thursday night. Bryan Ketchie makes the start on the mound for Windy City against Gateway’s Clint Freeman.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 CDT. The broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
