ThunderBolts suffer 7-4 loss in series opener

Things 7 Bolts 4

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Washington Wild Things scored the final three runs to break a 4-4 tie with the ThunderBolts as the Bolts dropped their fifth straight game, 7-4 at Standard Bank Stadium Friday night.

Washington (11-8) got an auspicious start as Carter McEachern doubled in the first inning and scored on a two-out error. They added another run the following inning as Hector Roa, who would reach base four times in the game, hit a leadoff single. Mike Hill took his spot on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on a James Harris single.

The ThunderBolts (7-10) answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning. David Oppenheim and Blair Beck singled to put two on with two outs before Will Krug singled home Oppenheim.

The Wild Things’ lead ballooned to three runs in the fourth. Roa walked, Hill singled and Mick Fennell brought home a run on a groundout. Harris scored another with an RBI triple.

A two-out rally in the bottom of the inning tied up the score. Darius Day and Krug singled and a bloop double from Tim Zier plated both runners. Zier scored when Tyler Straub reached on an error.

The tie was short-lived as Washington got a run on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth. They added two insurance runs in the seventh, when Roa singled and Hill hit a two-run homer.

Trevor Bradley (1-0) threw two perfect innings of relief for the win and Steve Heilenbach (0-1) allowed a run I one inning for the loss. Both starters lasted only four innings. Zach Strecker retired the ThunderBolts in the ninth for his sixth save.

The ThunderBolts continue their five-game homestand on Saturday with game two against the Wild Things. Will Landsheft (1-0, 0.50) will start for the Bolts against Washington’s Daniel Garmendia (1-1, 5.00). It is Beatles Night featuring a pregame concert from Kaleidoscope Eyes and there will be fireworks after the game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 and fans not in attendance can hear the radio broadcast WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
