Bolts get walloped in fifth straight loss

Greys 14 Bolts 2

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts were victims of a sweep for the first time this season as the home team fell to the Frontier Greys 14-2 Wednesday.  The Greys put up 14 unanswered runs after the ThunderBolts scored a pair of runs to start the game.

Ryan Soares led off the game with a single and came around to score on Doug Joyce’s sacrifice fly.  In the 2nd inning Cregar led off the frame with a base hit and reached home when Adam Davis hit into a double play.

The Greys took both the lead and the momentum in the 4th inning.  With the bases loaded, Blake Bergeron hit a grounder to first base which allowed Mike Gallic to score.  After recording the out, Joyce tried throw out Justin Vasquez heading home, but the throw was off the mark and the Greys tied up the game.  One batter later Mark Micowski hit a ground ball to second base, but an error by Mike Torres allowed him to reach and Tyler Kolodny to score.  The Greys pushed across one more when Brock McCallister grounded out which plated Micowski.

The visiting team would put up another quart of runs an inning later.  Once again the Greys had the bases loaded, but this time Blake Bergeron scored all three runners with a triple into left field.  Bergeron later scored on a sac fly from Micowski to make it an 8-2 Greys lead.

The Greys weren’t finished adding to their lead as they put two more across in the 7th inning.  Kolodny hit a two out solo homerun and Esteban Meletiche doubled home Bergeron putting the Greys ahead 10-2.

In the 8th inning the Greys added one more four-run inning.  Chris Kay first singled home Luis Parache, and three batters later Pugh and Kay went on a ride around the bases as Kolodny launched a three-run homerun for 14-2 lead in favor of the Greys.

Joe Zeller (2-1) settled down after a shaky start to earn the win. Daniel Cropper (0-1) took the loss in his ThunderBolts debut.

After an offday, the ThunderBolts will be back in action on Friday for the start of a three-game home series with the Washington Wild Things. Travis Strong (0-1, 4.21) will start for the Bolts against Washington’s Shawn Blackwell (0-2, 7.36). It will be $1.00 beer night at Standard Bank Stadium for Budweiser Fill ‘R Up Friday.
