Bolts 4, 3 Things 3, 5
CRESTWOOD— In a double header that needed 26 innings to be decided, the Windy City ThunderBolts (4-12) and Washington Wild Things (10-5) split a pair of games at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday evening.
Game one resumed in the top of the 4th inning after a rain delay Saturday night. The game started with the Wild Things on top 3-1, but Windy City was able to tie the ball game 3-3 with runs in the 5th and 6th innings. After that it was a lot of scoreless baseball. Both teams had plenty of chances in extra innings, but neither could score until the 19th inning. After making a clutch catch in center field in the top of the frame Andrew Brauer sent a solo homerun over the left field wall to finally end the ball game 4-3. That walk-off homerun was Brauer’s first homerun of his career, and snapped a six-game losing streak for Windy City.
Game two started a lot later than scheduled, but still provided plenty of action. The Wild Things scored one run in the 3rd and two in the 5th to start a 3-0 lead. All of the runs were scored with two outs. The ThunderBolts battled back to even up the game after some clutch two-out hitting in the 5th. Adam Davis doubled home Louie Templeton, while Ryan Soares, Mike Torres, and Brauer all connected on consecutive singles.
Washington retook the lead in the 7th with more two out production. Jovan Rosa doubled home Gus Benusa, also capping his game with a 4-for-4 effort. Two passed balls by Windy City allowed Rosa to come around and give the Wild Things a 5-3 lead and eventually the ball game.
In the first game Tyler Claburn earned his second win of the year while Will Scott (1-1) earned the loss. Game two of the double header gave Orlando Santos (1-1) the win and Mike Recchia (0-3) the loss.
Windy City will now travel to Joliet to begin a six-game road trip. First game will be Tuesday night for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The ThunderBolts will send Matt Wickswat (1-1, 3.12) to the mound against the Slammers’ Evan Anundsen (1-2, 6.27). Full coverage of the game can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
